The
Hampshire & Wight Trust for Maritime Archaeology
(HWTMA) have developed a pioneering initiative
to increase awareness of and access to our submerged
maritime heritage. Since 2000 they have been involved
with the creation of Dive Trails that encourage
responsible divers to visit shipwreck sites which
may otherwise be restricted or difficult to interpret.
They
also aim to educate divers about the important
features of the sites, the story of the ship and
its loss, the marine life which has colonised the
wreck and what archaeologists can learn from the
remains.
Divers follow numbered markers on
the seabed using a booklet for guidance. The booklets
also highlight the important features on the trails
helping divers to identify key areas. Video footage
has also been shot and is used to brief divers before
they board the boat.
