'I
have always struggled to achieve excellence. One
thing that cycling has taught me is that if you can
achieve something without a struggle, it is not going
to be satisfying.'
With the Island being a mere 23 miles across, a
single day's casual cycling along any of the hundreds
of miles of trails can take you on a memorable journey.
Follow old train tracks, through picturesque villages,
past stately homes, along sweeping beaches, over
undulating hills, down winding bridle paths, amongst
the trees following forest tracks, in and out of
the shadows of historic castles, all whilst experiencing
a harmonious one to one with the Island's wildlife
and staggering scenery.
Whether you want to tackle it alone or as a part
of one of our major cycling events throughout the
year there is lots to offer. Sunday 1st May sees
the 21st Isle of Wight Randonee. Cycle around the
Island on the 100km signed route, or if you fancy
something that is a little more agreeable with your
leg muscles then how about the midi Randonee at 55kms
or the mini at 30 km. Although not officially affiliated
to a charity, many participants use the Randonee
to raise funds for their chosen charitable organisation.
May bank holiday weekend (27th - 30th) is home to
the Wight
Diamond Festival . The Wight Diamond weekend
caters for all levels of cyclist and is a true celebration
of cycling with camping, live music and a general
party atmosphere being integral parts of the festivities.
From 17th to the 25th September cyclists from seasoned
professionals to families who dust the pedals down
once a year come and take part in the Isle of Wight
Cycling Festival, a full-on mix of competition and
family fun.
And finally the White
Air Festival , already Europe's largest extreme
sports festival and fast achieving legendary status;
it attracts over 600 of the world's top competitors
across 10 disciplines and expanded during 2004 to include
mountain biking. On site displays include BMX, Trials
and the climax of the 'cross country challenge' finishing
with an adrenalin fuelled cliff decent into the White
Air village.
