THE AWARDS

The Green Island Awards are based on an accumulative points system that is translated into a percentage score and finally an award standard. There are over 100 prescribed measures that carry a points allocation dependant on their respective ecological value, only measures that are applicable to the specific site are included in the scoring.

GOLD STANDARD
Gold is our top-level sustainable tourism certificate and indicates excellent environmental, economic & social performance across all ten awards criteria; energy, water, waste, purchasing, customer experience, wildlife & landscape, innovation, marketing & management and transport. A typical Gold Award winner will have assessed all of its environmental aspects and implemented a high percentage of measures to improve the level of business sustainability. Each business' full Green Island performance is outlined in detail within their respective pages on this site. Gold standard businesses must score 85%+ in their Green Island grading.

SILVER STANDARD
Silver is our intermediate sustainable tourism certificate and indicates good levels of environmental management across all aspects of their business with a sound commitment to continual improvement. A typical Silver Award winner will have implemented a range of environmental management measures although is yet to achieve a fully integrated programme that addresses almost all of the environmental impacts of their business. For example a range of energy reduction measures are in place although they do not cover all aspects or there is a certain level of local products sourced but not a full range. Each business' full Green Island performance is outlined in detail within their respective pages on this site. Silver standard businesses must score 70-84% in their Green Island grading.

BRONZE STANDARD
Bronze is the entry-level sustainable tourism certificate and indicates an initial commitment to environmental management and the implementation of a series of initial measures and improvements. The majority of Bronze Award winners are generally at the first stage of Green Island certification and tend to move towards the Silver Award within a year of membership. Each business' full Green Island performance is outlined in detail within their respective pages on this site. Bronze standard businesses must score 50-69% in their Green Island grading.

TBG / To Be Graded
The TBG (to be graded) logo indicates a business that not yet gone through the full Green Island Award process. The TBG logo is recognition of their initial commitment to adopting more sustainable practices and that they are waiting for full grading visit from Green Island.
