The Riverside Centre provides a place
for conferencing, a restaurant, meeting facilities and
a place that provides opportunities for all members of
society through empowerment and support. As an Island charity
it works with other voluntary providers, statutory agencies
and the independent sector: sharing an understanding of
diversity.
The restaurant uses some locally grown food. Timber used
on site is usually reclaimed from which the centre makes
and sells its own craft products, such as bird boxes. The
rear courtyard garden shows an excellent example of drought
tolerant planting, using reclaimed timber, hardy species
and mulching.
The on-site environmental project, the Footprint Trust,
hosts a number of island projects to help protect the islands
environment. The Trusts manager also provides an induction
talk to new staff to make them aware of the centres environmental
policies and practices.
