The Coastal Visitor Centre
is made up of 10 themed rooms each looking at a different
aspect of the Islands coastline and its management.
These range from the plant and animal life that inhabit
this dramatic habitat, to the marine and inter-tidal
archaeology.
As well as displays the Visitors Centre also offers
an extensive education programme relating to the coastline,
habitats and geohazards. The Centre is located within
the Undercliff (Ventnor) - a band of fallen land that
runs from Bonchurch in the East to Blackgang in the
West. The Undercliff is the largest urban landslide
complex in North Western Europe and therefore a popular
area for study by earth science students.
The Local Authority, the Isle of Wight, has responsibility
for the longest stretch of Coastline in the United
Kingdom - 67 miles - and provides an ideal opportunity
to study a variety of coastal issues and habitats within
a relatively small area.
