Come and meet Medusa, Cocky
and their Roman friends in the incredible mosaics
at Brading Roman Villa. This award-winning villa
located at the foot of Brading Downs is open all
year and in all weathers. First built in the second
century, the villa was re-discovered in 1879. The
building and its finds have been gradually uncovered
and preserved over the years to give us an insight
into life on Vectis. The garden provides the sights
and smells of Roman horticulture, as well as showing
an example of a drought tolerant garden.
Island made Roman Pottery, known as
Vectis Ware, has been found as far away as Normandy,
but you can buy your own locally made replica piece
of Vectis Ware from the gift shop. There is also an
on-site café and conferencing facilities.
The roof of the building has been
planted with sedum, increasing its insulation properties
and helping the building ‘blend in’ with
the surrounding area when viewed from the downs. The
building is an example of the evolution of modern architecture,
winning a Civic trust award in 2005.
