EVENTS AND FESTIVALS
The Isle of Wight hosts over
200 events each year from town carnivals and regattas
to major international sailing and extreme sports
events. With its natural harbours, sandy beaches,
rugged downland and more miles of footpath and cycleways
than road, the Island is the perfect location for
outdoor activities such as walking, cycling, sailing
and extreme sports.
This has led to the development of
key sustainable events, such as the Isle of Wight Walking
Festival (the biggest in Britain), Skandia Cowes Week
and White Air Extreme Sports Festival.
All of the listed events contain the Green Island
tourism ethos at their core. The Walking Festival
promotes the most sustainable form of travel, the
White Air festival relies on wind, waves and gravity
to power all of its events, the cycling festival
promotes forms of sustainable transport, Cowes Week
again is powered by the wind and little else goes
on outside of the bars and shops when its not blowing!
Bestival is 'green' to the core
and even includes a WI tent and farmers market. The
Apple Days and Garlic Festivals are events with a
slightly different appeal with the focus on traditional
crafts, local produce and the rural Island, these
help support and promote a range of local products,
crafts and initiatives - again central themes of
Green Island
