Gift To Nature is a visitor payback scheme managed
by Island 2000 Trust, which aims to show how tourism
and conservation can help each other.
Tourism is vitally important to
the economy of the Isle of Wight; however, very little
money earned from Tourism is spent on looking after
the Island's wonderful countryside itself. Gift to
Nature aims to change this by working with local
tourism businesses to invite tourists to make a voluntary
donation towards local conservation projects.
The following are just a few examples of how Island
businesses currently support the scheme:
Freshwater Fruit Farm add
an optional £1 donation onto the price of a
holiday.
Heathfield Farm Camping provide
leaflets of local walks in return for a donation
to Gift To Nature.
Frenchman's Cove Country Hotel places
a printed envelope in each bedroom, asking guests
for a small donation.
Every penny raised is spent
on Island conversation projects. So far we have improved
habitats for Ventnor's rare wall lizards, built a
squirrel hide & trail in Parkhurst Forest and
recently developed a wetland walk in the Sandown
area, improving habitats for Kingfishers and Water
Voles. Our project for 2004 is to improve access
to a meadow in Totland that is important for its
butterflies and wildflowers.
Look out for businesses supporting Gift To Nature
and give a donation if you can.
